Shinsekai + Dotonbori · 15–17 Tastings · $53–70

Osaka Street Food Tour

Osaka's famous dishes are street food, and street food is scattered. A crawl covers fifteen to seventeen tastings across the districts in one evening, at roughly three to four dollars a dish — which is less than assembling the same range yourself, before counting the time.

Street food is not a category in Osaka, it is the cuisine. Takoyaki, kushikatsu and most of what the city is known for is eaten standing up, and the good versions are scattered across districts that do not connect obviously.

    The value arithmetic

    TourPriceTastingsPer dish
Shinsekai street food crawl$7015 tastings, 3 drinksabout $4
    17 foods at 4 eateries$5317 foodsabout $3
    12 dishes, 2 drinks$5112 dishesabout $4
Backstreet foodie tour$85fewer, longerpremium for the streets

Compare dishes, not hours. It is the single most useful filter on this market, and the price gap between a twelve-dish and a seventeen-dish evening is usually smaller than the gap in what you eat.

    Where the crawls go

Shinsekai is the retro district under Tsutenkaku and the home of kushikatsu — crumbed skewers, communal sauce, and the no-double-dipping rule every visitor breaks once. Dotonbori is the neon strip by the canal, and the eating that matters there is one street back from the water.

The most-booked crawl works Shinsekai; several others pair both districts. See how the two differ.

    What to expect

Three hours or so, on foot, eating standing up, with a guide ordering at counters that mostly do not carry English menus. It is a lot of food — arrive hungry, and do not book dinner afterwards.

"This was a fun tour around the Shinsekai neighborhood with stops at five restaurants. Anna, our guide, is very fun and engaged and happy to answer any questions. She made sure we knew what we were eating and how to enjoy it best, and explained all of the drink options (3 drinks are included and you can purchase more if you like). She also gives great recommendations for places to try on your own after the tour. Overall this was a great introduction to the Osaka street food scene and I would recommend it to all (omnivorous) travelers to Osaka."

"We went on this tour in August with Matt as our guide and it was the highlight of our time in Osaka! The tour included five different stops with a variety of food and drink at each stop. (All food and three alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks were included in the price so great value for money!) All of the food we tried was absolutely delicious and proper local specialties! The tour companies has a strong relationship with the local business we visited creating a great atmosphere and friendly service. You will not leave hungry!! Matt was very friendly and gave us the history of Osaka and interesting facts on our journey. He made the trip friendly and interactive making the tour feel like a trip out with friends! A great experience for everyone, couples, families or solo travellers. A must do on your trip to Osaka. Thank you Matt!!"

The group I joined was incredibly welcoming and warm. I did this activity on my own, but it honestly felt like I was spending time with people I had known for years.
